Matt Krakowski – Owner/Head Trainer

Matt was born and raised in the Metro Detroit area. He attended St. Anne and De La Salle and was active in sports at both schools. After graduating high school he attended Western Michigan University and received a bachelors degree in Secondary Education. While in college he joined the Army ROTC and decided to join the Active Duty Army upon graduation.

When Matt graduated he moved to Ft. Benning, GA to begin his training as an Infantry Officer. He trained at Ft. Benning for a year then was stationed at Schofield Barracks on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. Shortly after arriving in Hawaii he was sent to Iraq on his first combat tour. In 2009, about a year after he returned from his first tour in Iraq he was put in a new job where he had a boss that held a CrossFit Level 1 Certificate. His name was Mike Berdy and he is the man responsible for Matt falling in love with CrossFit. They did CrossFit workouts every morning and Matt started getting into great shape. Matt was soon sent off to Iraq for the second time and while he was there he continued doing CrossFit, but now he was doing it alone. He spent much of his free time studying fitness and nutrition and taught himself many of the exercises conducted in CrossFit workouts. At the end of that combat tour Matt was in great shape and has continued to do CrossFit to this day.

Since 2007, Matt has trained hundreds of people with a wide variety of physical abilities. Whether it was helping a friend lose a few inches prior to a wedding or getting Soldiers physically prepared for combat, Matt has consistently produced tremendous results. He has increased the physical fitness test score of every Soldier he has trained and consulted with many others to develop plans resulting in them reaching their health and fitness goals. Matt has a proven track record of providing fast and effective results no matter what your desired outcome may be. Matt considers himself a lifelong student and never stops his professional development. If there is a new health and fitness book he can get his hands on he will always read it with an intense level of analysis to find out how he can take the strongest points and add them to his training methodology. He frequents training seminars to learn new methods of training and share ideas with fellow trainers.

Matt has been fortunate enough to train the Clinton Township SWAT team, the L’Anse Creuse North Varsity Football Team, Dakota High School Varsity Hockey Team as well as some Division I Collegiate Athletes and Professional Athletes.

Gina Harms – Kids CrossFit & Trainer

Gina was born and raised in the Metro Detroit area. In High School she participated in Basketball and Track and Field, training year-round. Gina’s love for fitness was discovered during this time, when she was first exposed to proper weightlifting and speed training. After graduating high school, Gina attended Grand Valley State University, where she continued her athletic endeavors and training as a member of the Track and Field Team while earning a Bachelor degree in Social Work .

After graduating from college, Gina began a career in child welfare. Through this experience, Gina learned a lot about helping people to better their lives for themselves and their families, which continues to be a driving factor in her work as a Switch Trainer.

After college, Gina tried to stay fit with various forms of exercise, but lacked the results that she desired. Not only were her efforts not providing the physical results she was seeking, but they were not providing the stress relief that exercise had provided in the past. After years of frustration and giving birth to her son, Gina finally caved in and tried CrossFit. It was “love at first WOD” for Gina and she dedicated herself to learning as much as she could about the sport of CrossFit. In a few short months Gina was seeing better results, both physically and emotionally, than she had ever experienced. At that time, Gina decided to work towards becoming a trainer in order to help people become their “best self”. She brings a positive and encouraging presence to box and loves nothing more than to help others to achieve their goals.

As a mother, Gina understands the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. She has dedicated a great deal of time to learning about nutrition, the Paleo lifestyle, and the Zone Diet. Gina is always available to give input and advice regarding nutrition. She currently writes about healthy recipes on the Switch CrossFit blog on a weekly basis, so check it out if you are interested!

Joe Sellers – Barbell Club

joe sellersjoe sellers

Joe discovered CrossFit through the Internet, much like everyone else in this age of technology. As exciting as CrossFit looked, Joe was convinced that he would never be ready to take it on… or so he thought.

One fateful day, while sitting at work surfing the web, Joe’s employer told him about Switch CrossFit. Switch CrossFit was a new and exciting gym opening up right near him and Joe decided to attend the grand opening. Upon his arrival, Joe met with a young, fit looking warrior named Matt, the owner of Switch CrossFit. Matt, in all of his glory and shiny bald head, had such a convincing and upbeat attitude about his new pride and joy, that it finally convinced Joe to the pull the trigger and sign up at Switch CrossFit. The results Joe had obtained through Switch CrossFit were enough to keep him going and would crush any doubt he had prior to signing up.

As time went on, Matt invited Joe to start assisting the trainers of Switch CrossFit. Not much time would pass before realizing that coaching these members would be a newfound passion for him.

Joe has since focused his own training on Olympic Weightlifting and finds great joy in helping the members with their own lifting technique. Joe welcomes anyone seeking help in the grueling, underrated sport and will always take great joy in making members better than they were yesterday.

Scott found CrossFit in 2008, while working as a Police Officer, through a police website. He soon began following the workouts at and doing them at a local gym. Scott has developed a passion for Olympic Weightlifting and has focused much of his training to this sport. He has competed in many local and state meets with the intention of continuing his career as a competitive weightlifter.

Mike Novak – Legends & Trainer

mike novaknovak

Mike Novak was born and raised in Metro Detroit. He played basketball, football, and wrestling throughout high school. While going back to college to finish his secondary education degree he became a certified personal trainer. After working as a personal trainer he realized that is where his passion was. He finished his education degree but decided to pursue his passion for fitness full time. He loved helping people obtain their fitness goals and establishing plans to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

While he was great at motivating others, he found it difficult to get the intense workouts he craved without spending hours at a gym. With a wife and 4 kids, he was looking for a fitness program that would let him be competitive, intense and social without giving up too much family time.

He looked into CrossFit and instantly fell in love with all aspects of the program from the community atmosphere to the people and the competition. Mike wanted to take his love for CrossFit a step further by becoming a CrossFit Level One Coach. He has become so committed to CrossFit that he believes it to be the best workout for everyone looking to improve their heath and fitness. Mike encourages all of his current clients to convert to the CrossFit style of workouts.

In his spare time, Mike enjoys coaching youth sports, attending his children’s sports and gymnastics activities, playing basketball and outdoor physical activities, CrossFit competitions, family time and volunteering with the youth at his church.

Gary Malburg – Trainer

garygary lift

Gary is a lifelong Macomb County resident. After attending Chippewa Valley High School and Wayne State University, Gary started his career teaching and coaching for L’Anse Creuse Schools. Coaching multiple championship teams, Gary loved motivating his players to become more than they thought they could be.

Dedicated to his athletes and students, he would put in endless hours training and educating them, leaving little time for his own physical fitness. Gary never found anything that he was motivated by as much as he was motivated to improve those he coached and taught. Going to the gym for a couple hours a day had never really worked for him. Finally, with the urging of a friend, Gary hesitantly signed up for fundamentals at Switch CrossFit. This endeavor turned out to be life altering.

Switch CrossFit was never boring and didn’t take 2 hours of monotonous training! It was fun, intense, and filled with great people. Finishing a workout became a great sense of achievement, so much so that Gary was soon coming 5 days a week. Soon a Switch Nutrition Challenge, along with Gary’s intrigue and understanding of biochemistry, transformed his eating habits and the results perpetuated the choices! The one month trial soon became more than 3 years and a new commitment to health and fitness.

An incredible desire to alter lives as his has been altered finally led Gary to embark upon a new venture in health and fitness, specifically, personal and group training. That journey began with his passing his CrossFit Level 1 Trainer class and has been taken on with significantly less hesitation than his first CrossFit class! Bringing energy, imparting knowledge, and passing on his passion for fitness and people are his biggest goals for every training session he leads.

Kai & Koa Krakowski – Dog WOD Trainers

kai & koakai & koakai & koa

Kai was born in a small town near Jackson, MS and 8 weeks later he was united with his best friend and father, Matt. As a very smart puppy, Kai learned how to be a very obedient and disciplined dog in no time. He didn’t let that stop him from having fun though. Any chance Kai got to play with other dogs, humans or frisbees he jumped on it. Once Kai was old enough he started going on runs with Matt and he immediately loved the exercise. He and Matt would often go on 3-4 mile runs, typically consisting of Kai pulling for the first 80% of the run and Matt pulling for the last 20% of the run. In addition to running, Kai likes to strengthen his legs by doing long walks with his backpack. At the time of this writing Kai is able to walk a couple miles with 15lbs on his back.

Kai’s interests include playing with his toys, chewing on bones, digging holes in the yard, sleeping, licking Matt in his face, riding in the truck, playing frisbee, running and playing with other dogs and people, chasing cats and eating. Kai began leading Dog WODs ever since Switch CrossFit opened and he has loved it ever since. He is currently in negotiation with Greg Glassman to establish a CrossFit Dog Trainer Seminar.
