Thanksgiving Recipe Round Up

Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away! It is the official kick-off of the holiday season, which means two things: 1. Quality time with the family, and 2. Quality time stuffing our faces with unhealthy foods. Both of these things are awesome…. in moderation (*wink*wink…just kidding, Mom!). Honestly though, this time of year can be the start of a serious unhealthy spiral for a lot of us. A splurge meal every now and then is perfectly fine but when holiday events start filling your weekends, one cheat meal can quickly turn to two months of binge eating everything in sight.

I’d say that Thanksgiving is probably my favorite holiday. I thoroughly enjoy slaving over the stove all day long to prepare a huge meal. I love the football, the food, and the family time. As the years have gone on, I’ve dropped SOME of my unhealthy habits and tried to replace some of my favorite menu items with cleaner versions. I’ve compiled a pretty decent list of healthy Thanksgiving recipes below and am sharing them in hopes that some of you will be adventurous and choose to “clean up” your Thanksgiving meal. I’m not claiming that all of these recipes are HEALTHY because they are “paleo”, but they are most definitely a step-up from the traditional recipes.

First up, the most important (and time consuming!)…the Turkey! I cannot stress this enough: you MUST brine your turkey. I started a few years ago and have had a 100% success rate. The results are always a turkey that is flavorful and NEVER dried out.

To say that I’m a stuffing freak would be an understatement. If presented with a boring, lack-luster stuffing, I’m straight up offended. I have gathered up a few different recipes, but the first is my go-to (with the addition of adding ground sausage!).

Stuffing/Dressing:

Grain Free Stuffing

Cauliflower Rice Stuffing

Homestyle Stuffing

*Potatoes, Faux-tatoes, and Gravy galore! I have not decided which of these will end up on my menu this year, but I think it’s pretty safe to say that the first recipe would be a grand slam.

Potatoes/Gravy:

Sweet Potato Casserole

Hasselback Sweet Potatoes

Scalloped Sweet Potatoes

Parsnip Turnip Puree

Garlic Cauliflower “Mashed Potatoes”

Herb Gravy

Vege Sides:

Roasted Asparagus

Bacon Pecan Brussels Sprouts

I can say with 100% certainty that these Caramel Apple Pie Bars will be on my menu this year. I made a batch a few weeks ago (you know, to get rid of some of the million apples I had from my orchard escapades) and they were demolished by clean eaters and non-clean eaters alike!

Desserts:

Caramel Apple Pie Bars

Pecan Pie

Pumpkin Pie

*Stay tuned next week for a collection of recipes that will use up any (if any!) leftovers that you may have!
